What is an earthquake?
An earthquake is sudden ground motion caused by energy released inside the Earth. Most earthquakes happen when accumulated stress overcomes friction along a fault and the rocks move, sending seismic waves through the ground.
The point inside the Earth where rupture begins is the hypocenter, or focus. The epicenter is the point on the surface directly above it.

Earthquake magnitude, depth and seismic activity
Magnitude describes the size of an earthquake. On the map, larger markers represent larger magnitudes, with M5.0+ events emphasized more strongly. Depth shows how far below the surface the earthquake began.
A shallow earthquake and a deep earthquake with the same magnitude can be experienced very differently. Actual shaking also depends on distance, local geology, rupture characteristics and building conditions.
Why earthquakes cluster near tectonic plate boundaries
Most global seismic activity is concentrated around plate boundaries, where tectonic plates collide, separate or slide past one another. The optional boundary layer helps show why earthquakes repeatedly cluster around Japan, Indonesia, Alaska, western North and South America and other active zones.
The plate overlay is reference context, while the earthquake locations themselves come from the live USGS feed.
How earthquake monitoring works
Seismic networks use instruments such as seismometers to measure ground motion. Data from multiple stations allows monitoring agencies to estimate an earthquake location, depth, origin time and magnitude.
Those estimates can be revised as more information arrives, which is why the table identifies events that USGS marks as reviewed and links back to the source event record.
