Where the earthquake data comes from

The main earthquake feed comes from the USGS. EarthquakeTodayMap.com reformats that public data for the map, statistics, rankings and event table. The tracker refreshes regularly, but earthquake records can change as monitoring agencies receive more measurements and review an event.

Events marked Automatic are machine-generated USGS solutions that may still be revised. Events marked Reviewed have been reviewed by an analyst. Each event can link back to its original USGS record for more detail.

How the nearest-earthquake tool works

If you choose the nearest-earthquake feature, your browser asks for location permission. The site then compares your coordinates with earthquake epicenters in the current feed and calculates an approximate surface distance. The coordinates used for that calculation stay in the browser and are not intentionally sent to EarthquakeTodayMap.com.
